Akiko is living proof that you can create an illustration and eat it, too. Thanks to one of her stellar works of art—made out of cake—Akiko snapped up the 2014 Tomie dePaola Award, an honor that’s bestowed on a promising illustrator chosen by Mr. dePaola himself and is sponsored by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Since graduating from McNay Art Institute, in San Antonio, Akiko has worked in educational publishing and taught illustration. But these days, you’ll most likely find Akiko and her family in a tiny Texas town, living among their chickens, cats, dogs, and sheep—plus, a pony, a donkey, a pig, and a small herd of milking goats, whose milk makes irresistible cheeses and cheesecakes.
